Main area of activity of organization:

  1. Study of the biodiversity of flora, fauna, micro-organisms and soil cover of Azerbaijan, protection and rational use of gene pool (Supervisor: academician J.A.Aliyev)

  2. Molecular-genetics and physical-chemical bases of vital activity of living organisms (Supervisor: academician J.A.Aliyev)

Main scientific achievements made over the last five years:

  • The volume I of ‘Flora of Azerbaijan’ in Azerbaijani language that includes 588 species belonging to 178 genus 32 families, as well as 18 families 36 genus and about 200 new species have been submitted to publish. 24 families 91 genus 410 species have been prepared for the volume II.

  • 2nd edition of the ‘Red book of Azerbaijan’ has been prepared to publish. 338 species of higher plants, 12 species of fungi and 23 species of lower plants have been accessed into the new list.

  • A screening of drought resistance of wheat genotypes of Azerbaijan has been carried out by using functional markers for the first time. It was ascertained that while genes Dreb 1 transcription factor (drought resistance element binding) cis-regulating drought resistance  (positive) are determined only in the 3rd chromosome of A genome (3А) in 11 wheat genotypes, in Bereketli-95 genotype they are located in both А (3А) and B (3B) genomes.

  • 3 different Nano-viruses – 2 different Faba bean necrotic yellow virus and Faba bean necrotic stunt virus belonged to Nanovirus genus of Nanoviridae family have been determined by molecular and serological methods in legume (Vicea faba L.), pea (Cicer arierium L.) and lentil (Lentil L.) collected in different regions of Azerbaijan and their complete molecular identification has been carried out.

  • In algae flora of the Caspian Sea a rare genus Amicula (Amicula speculum Witkowski) and Nitzscha aurariae Cholnoky have been revealed.

  • Biologically active substances were isolated from different organs of useful plants spread in Azerbaijan flora, their qualitative and quantitative compositions, biosynthesis and their role in plant life have been investigated as well as preparation technology of biologically active medicinal preparations and food additives were elaborated.

  • The Institute staff have participated in several joint international projects supported by NATO, IUCN, CEPF, INTAS, INCO COPERNICUS, STCU, Volkswagen Stifftung etc.:

  • 2004-2005 – “Selection and Characterization of Some Heavy Metal Hyperaccumulators from Azerbaijan Flora”;

  • 2006-2009 – “Coordination and Development of Plant Red List Assessments for Caucasus Biodiversity Hotspot”;

  • 2006-2009 – “Novel Approach for Ecological Improvement of the Pipeline”;

  • 2007– “Survey and Status Assessment of Potentially Threatened Pyrus sp. in the Caucasus”;

  • 2007-2008 – “Plant Conservation in the Caucasus Protected Areas – Identification of Important Plant Areas to meet the 2010 Target”;

  • 2010-2012 – “Development of Bioremediation Methods for the Soils of Absheron Polluted by Industrial Waste”;

  • 2011-2013 – “Developing Tools for Conservation the Plant Diversity of the Caucasus”;

  • Successful projects of the First Competition of Science Development Foundation under the President of the Azerbaijan Republic:

1.     Statistical mining of the protein DataBank: recognition, organization and use of repeated polypeptide chain patterns (Project manager – J.A.Aliyev);

2.     Screening of drought stress tolerance of wheat genotypes collected in Azerbaijan GeneBank by molecular markers and investigation of physiological, biochemical and biophysical parameters in tolerant genotypes (Project manager – I.Huseynova);

3.     Comparative computer analysis of the promotor architecture of human and mice genes (Project manager – I.Shahmuradov);

4.     Biodiversity conservation: assessment of status of rare and endangered plant and fungal species of Azerbaijan (Project manager – V.Ali-zade).

  • The Institute has signed Memorandums with different scientific institutions in the framework of international cooperation:

  • Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and Botanic Museum (Germany);

  • Fribourg University Botanical Garden and Biology Department (Switzerland);

  • International Centre of Chemistry and Biology Sciences of Karachi University (Pakistan).

6 monographs, 6 scientific proceedings & transactions, 7 books, 2 book chapters (by international publishers), a map,  622 articles (393 in local, 229 in foreign journals) have been published and 5 patents achieved by the staff of the Institute during last 5 years.

Brief information on the organization’s history:

The Institute was established in 1936. The first director was an outstanding investigator of Caucasus flora academician A.A.Grossheim. Prominent scientists as V.I.Ulyanischev, L.I.Prilipko, M.G.Abutalibov, Y.M.Isayev, B.Kh.Tutayug, G.E.Kapinos, Sh.O.Barkhalov, V.J.Hajiev, S.H.Musayev et al. had played the great role in habituation of specialists in the field of botany. Immense achievements in modern scientific trends as molecular biology and plant genetics as well as integration of the Institute to the world science belong to academician J.A.Aliyev. At present there are 131 scientists, among them 1 academician, 5 corresponding members of the ANAS, 13 doctors and 74 PhDs at the Institute.
