For purposeful synthesis of chalcogenides and oxychalcogenide compounds by investigation of chemical interaction in the appropriate systems the plotting of a state diagram, projection of liquidus surface, and study of composition structure -property correlation of the obtained phases. 

The study of the physical and optical properties of synthesized crystals and chalcogenide and oxychalcogenide glasses has permitted to use them widely as the materials in luminophors, lazers, optical lens, filters. It is established that all the complex oxisulfides of lanthanides are formed by peritectic reaction. The structures of the phases received and the solid products of their decay are connected with each other by the alternative plans of reconstructions and existence of slight collective displacement. These criteria refer to the compounds formed by peritectic reactions and to the other class of compounds and this indicates to their common character. Existence of structural identity of peritectic compounds and the products of their decay is the main idea in explanation of physicochemical properties and purposeful synthesis of new materials.
