Study of the evolution of sedimentary basins and the formation of hydrocarbons at great depths. Study of catastrophic processes of natural and anthropogenic origin, prediction of geological hazards and the establishment of monitoring systems. Development of scientific basis for environmental management, environmental evolution and research on the development of a new approach methodology for solving problems of analysis of oil and gas fields development.

Main scientific achievements made over the last five years: |
On the basis of 3h-dimensional modeling evolution of thermal conditions, oil and gas formation sites in space and time was reproduced; reservoir characteristics and phase state of fluids were estimated. The features of various forms of hydrocarbon migration, covering the whole cycle of their ontogenesis in relation to the geological conditions of the South Caspian basin (SCB) were considered. Spatial nonuniformity of conditions of hydrocarbon migration from source rocks was established, the presence of power sites of structures by hydrocarbons of underlying sediments was revealed, range of subvertical migration of oil and gas was estimated, the processes of reformation and destruction of oil and gas deposits were studied. The new method and software package "REZAYR" were prepared. Geothermal energy resources of the Pliocene-Quaternary deposits of Azerbaijan depression zones were estimated. New data on deformation processes was obtained by GPS monitoring and geodynamic studies. As a result of microtremor measurements with using seismic system GURALP the distribution of resonance frequencies, gain factor for soil, point increment for major earthquake was determined. Established geotechnological base allows to simulate the leaching processes of gold and associated with it elements from the ore in place of their occurrence. The database on mud volcanoes of the world for compiling the catalogue is being prepared. |

Brief information on the organization's history: |
In 1926 the Research and Study Society of Azerbaijan (investigations in a filed of geology and geophysics) was established. In 1932 Azerbaijan subdivision of Transcaucasian branch of Academy of sciences of USSR (AzSTBAS) (study of natural resources of Azerbaijan) was established on the basis of this society. In 1935 AzSTBAS was reorganized to Azerbaijani branch of Academy of Sciences of USSR (ABAS USSR) with a number of institutions, including geology sector. In 1938 the geology sector was reformed into an independent research institution – Geology Institute In 2003 the Geology Institute of ANAS was established on the basis of the Geology Institute and the Institute of problems of deep oil-gas fields (IPDOGF).
