	Main area of activity of organization:	Development of scientific bases of creation of functional oligomers and polymers of special use; development of methods of synthesis of functional monomers, additives to polymers - modifiers, antipyrenes, stabilizers and other auxiliary substances; creation of composition materials of various use with useful exploitation properties, filled systems, polymer-oligomer and polymer-polymer mixtures; development of complex methods of reprocessing of wastes and side products of chemical industry.
	Main scientific achievements made over the last five years:	The scientific principles of synthesis of new functional monomers and polymers have been developed and polymer materials used in capacious-scientific fields - resists, semiconductors, antioxidants, etc have been created; the methods of synthesis of new reactive oligomers have been developed and on their basis the film-forming materials of various use have been created; the methods of purposeful synthesis of functional compounds have been developed and on their basis the optically and biologically active preparations, surface-active substances and inhibitors of corrosion have been obtained; on the base of industrial polymers the general principles of creation of filled composition materials, polymer-oligomer, polymer-polymer mixtures have been developed; the methods of synthesis of new plasticizers, stabilizers, modifiers, antipyrenes, etc. useful as efficient additives have been developed.
	Brief information on the organization’s history:	The Institute was founded in 1966. In 1966-1978 the Institute functioned as a branch of the Institute of Petrochemical Processes of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. On the base of scientific and material potential in 1979 the branch was changed into independent Institute of Chloroorganic Synthesis. Since 1991 - up to the present the Institute functions as the Institute of Polymer Materials. The first director of the Institute (1966-1973) was professor S.I.Sadikh-zade. From 1973 to 1983 - the director of the Institute was the corresponding member of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, professor M.M.Guseinov. Since 1987 the director of the Institute is the corresponding member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, professor A.A.Efendiev.
