Main area of activity of organization:

Peaceful use of nuclear energy; Radiative study of materials and Radiation physics; Nuclear and Radiation safety (Ecology, Radioecology, Radiobiology); Physicochemical problems of energy transformation processes; Transformation of renewable energy sources

Main scientific achievements made over the last five years:

The radiation-induced processes in solid matters:

  • Radiation Heterogeneous Center of Water on the surface of zirconium has been  defined to be charged;

  • The regulations of creation and recombination of luminescent centers under the influence of γ-rays in laminated GaS monocrystal has been defined;

  • Relaxor ferroelectric condition of TlInS2 (D>300 Megarad) crystal has been obtained by the influence of γ-rays

Obtaining and study of energy transformers on the base of polymer composites, nanocomposites and AIVBVI compounds:

  • At 0.5-1.5 megarad absorption dose of γ-irradiation special composite system linearly depending on dose and the intensity of luminescent rays happening at Tγ=165K were revealed;

  • Physicochemical regulations of gasification and changing into liquid of solid organic wastes were determined by using renewable energy sources and radiation;

  • Crude oil was firstly prepared for treatment in oil field by using solar power system;

  • It was firstly determined that radiolytic transformation of weather is stimulated by delta electrons being emitted from dispersed iron.

Studying of radio-ecological and physicochemical basement of the influence of energy-fuel complex to environment:

  • Critical concentration supplying chain process of radiochemical decomposition of hydrocarbons in water was determined to be equal to 10-3% and it was shown that oxygen solved in water accelerates this process.

Brief information on the organization’s history:

Radiation Research Sector of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences was established according to the decision ¹27 on 21.05.1969 of State Committee on Science and Technology at USSR Ministers’ Soviet, and to the decision on 20.06.1969 of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences’ Presidium in order to develop new and perspective directions (radiation chemistry, photochemistry, plasma chemistry) of technical and applied chemistry.

After Azerbaijan being Independent Republic the problems of radiation safety and nuclear security, radioecology, peaceful use of nuclear energy became much more actual in our country. That’s why by the decision ¹81 on 21.05.2002 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan Republic and by the decision ¹13/1 on 03.05.2002 of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Institute of Radiation Problems was established on the base of Radiation Research Sector.

Institute of Radiation of Problems is the only scientific institution at Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences system and Azerbaijan Republic which is conducting fundamental scientific and technical researches and realizing home and international information exchanges in the fields of peaceful use of nuclear energy, radiation safety, radioecology, physico-technical problems of power engineering, non-renewable energy transformation processes, radiation effects in solid matters and radiative study of materials.

The current main scientific-research directions of the Institute are followings:

  • Peaceful use of nuclear energy;

  • Radiative study of materials and Radiation physics;

  • Nuclear and Radiation safety (Ecology, Radioecology, Radiobiology);

  • Physicochemical problems of energy transformation processes. Alternative power engineering
