	Main area of activity of organization:	Study of the species composition of the animal world of Azerbaijan, the species spreading, evolution, formation history, ecology. Revealing of useful and harmful species, the protection of useful species and increasing of their numbers, development of the scientific fundamentals of measures for the pest control.
	Main scientific achievements made over the last five years:	Twenty thousand animal species were revealed belonging to various taxonomic groups were revealed as result of investigations of which 1500 species are Protozoa, 1200-parasitic organisms, 360-fitohelminths, 290-Rotatoria, 360-Carustacea, 14000-insects, 1100-arachnids, 311-molluscs, 101-fish species and subspecies, 10-amphibia, 54-reptiles, 362-birds, 105-mammals. Of them over-200 species, were described for the first time in science. The priority subjects of investigations were as follows: protection of rare and becoming extinct species, the environment protection against pollution and its influence on the animal world, the study of biological resources of the Caspian sea and Kura river basins.
	Brief information on the organization’s history:	In 1932 by Government's decree Zoological Department was set up in Azerbaijan Division of Transcaucasian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1936 Azerbaijan Division of Transcaucasian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences became Azerbaijan Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. On March 1 Institute of Zoology was set up on the basis of the Zoological Department. Since 1960 the Institute has been directed by academician M.A.Musayev.
